Abstract Axenic cultures are essential for studying microbial ecology, evolution, and genomics. Despite the importance of pure cultures, public culture collections are biased towards fast-growing copiotrophs, while many abundant aquatic prokaryotes remain uncultured due to uncharacterized growth requirements and oligotrophic lifestyles.
